The Kerala Science Congress, initiated in 1989 by the Science, Technology & Environment Committee (STEC), Govt. of Kerala is an annual event that brings together scientists and technologists from Kerala and beyond. It’s primary goal is to foster scientific thinking among the youth and serve as a platform for scientific dialogue, debate, and knowledge sharing. Over the years, it has evolved into a prominent gathering of the scientific community, facilitating the exchange of ideas and promoting advancements in science within the state. The upcoming 38th edition will be organized by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Govt. of Kerala, with coordination by KSCSTE-National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC), Thiruvananthapuram and St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Kochi, Ernakulam and will be held at St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Kochi, Ernakulam.
Focal Theme: Ocean Science for Blue Economy and Ecosystem Restoration.
The theme “Ocean Science for Blue Economy and Ecosystem Restoration” is very close to home for Kerala, a state shaped by its long coastline, rich marine life, and vibrant fishing and maritime economy. Holding the 38th Kerala Science Congress in Kochi makes this even more meaningful, as the city is home to top marine research centers like CMFRI – Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, CIFT – Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR CIFT),NIO- National Institute of Oceanography, KUFOS – Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies and CUSAT – Cochin University of Science and Technology. Kochi is also a hub of marine food processing industries. The Blue Economy is about using the ocean’s resources responsibly—supporting livelihoods, boosting the economy, and protecting the environment at the same time. For Kerala, this means sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, coastal tourism, renewable energy, and marine biotechnology. But our oceans also face challenges: pollution, erosion, and climate change threaten delicate ecosystems like mangroves, coral reefs, and estuaries. This theme invites scientists, policymakers, industries, and communities to work together to restore and protect our oceans while building sustainable economic opportunities. By combining research, technology, and local participation, Kerala can set an example for a resilient Blue Economy. After all, a healthy ocean is essential—not just for the state, but for the planet.
