Ernakulam Regional Office was established on 3rd April 2023 to expand and manage the activities of NATPAC in Ernakulam and its nearby districts. The office is located at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor with a floor space of 770 sqft. The Centre undertakes traffic and transportation studies for various departments, stakeholder agencies and private firms in the fields of traffic engineering and safety, transportation planning and water transport. The major works handled by the Centre includes – Feasibility study for a transportation hub at Karikkamuri; Traffic Master plan for Infopark area; Feasibility study of elevated corridor from Vytilla to Infopark; Junction Improvement study for Anicode junction in Chitoor-Tathamangalam municipality; Passenger Satisfaction study for KMRL; Ridership Augmentation study for KMRL; User perception study for KWML; Traffic Impact study for Convention Center in Kozhikode in association with Kozhikode Regional Office; Review and Upgradation of traffic signs and markings for CIAL; Feasibility of High Speed Corridor between Greenfield highway and CIAL; Traffic Management plan for Kalamassery and its vicinity etc.
In addition, the Centre provides technical advice to various government departments and agencies like the Police, Motor Vehicles Department, GIDA, PWD, District Town Planning etc, related to traffic management/ regulation, junction improvement, road safety, development plan etc. The wide variety of projects handled by the Centre also provides opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students to undertake internships and thesis/ projects using real-world traffic and transportation scenarios, which assists in their future career progression.
The Centre undertakes periodic training/ capacity building programmes covering various technical topics – Full Depth Reclamation, Road Safety Audit, Safe Road to School etc, covering not only the department and other practising engineers but also vulnerable target groups like school/ college students, communities etc.
The Centre has been instrumental in fostering collaborations, like MoU with IIT Palakkad, CUSAT etc, for furthering academic/ research activities. Collaborative projects in the pipeline include researchers from IITs, NITs and renowned institutions of National and Regional eminence. The Centre is continually evolving as per the needs of central Kerala and is dedicated to improvements in the Transportation arena for the societal good.
